Eastern Grip and Your Scissor - Part I
The Purpose
The Eastern Grip technique is an alternate grip used for open blade slicing, slide cutting, channelling and chipping. The grip can also be used for section cutting but, is not recommended. Its purpose is to relieve hand strain by using a more comfortable action and position. To understand the technique, you will have to firstly study these photos carefully. Capal Tunnel Syndrome is a problem for the hairdressing industry - it is caused by repetitive strain of the capal tunnels which run under the wrists and constrict the action of the tendons. The main cause of C.T.S. for hairdressers is their cutting techniques and blow drying technique. If you are serious about a long career as a hairdresser (and I assume that if you are reading this article, you are), think about the long term affects of making three million cuts (that scissor cuts, not hair cuts!) a year, and the strain on your tendons and hands.
Recommended
Any hairdresser who is already experiencing any hand pain around the wrist area or a pins and needles feeling, should seriously consider learning Eastern Grip. The reason that this grip is so good is that it avoids cocking the wrist while performing open blade techniques and relieves stress on the thumb motion. Scissor design has come a long way in the past few years and I am sure that scissor designers, like myself and others are concerned enough to continue development into more ergonomic designs. I would also strongly suggest, if you are experiencing any pain whatsoever, that your local doctor refer you for the correct advice either, to a physiotherapist or an R.S.I. specialist. The Technique
As I have mentioned, all open blade techniques and some cutting techniques, namely chipping and channelling can be performed using the Eastern Grip style. I will cover Chipping and Channelling in later articles. The artist in the photos is free-hand slicing to achieve less bulk and, a see-through appearance to a thick head of hair. Notice the grip, the scissor is held with the first finger and the thumb, the blades of the scissor face opposite to a conventional grip. The scissor can similarly be held using the second finger - try it and see what is more comfortable. The motion is away from the hairdresser and is more an arm motion than a wrist motion. Now compare this hand position to the way you would normally do this slicing procedure. Not only is the scissor easier to use in this fashion but, you can see your work easier without your hand being in the way! As always, this technique requires practise and the correct scissor .
Happy Cutting!
